GOING GREEN
Storage Tanks - Limited Hot Water
Hot water from a traditional tank-type
water heater comes from the storage water in the tank. As the
hot water supply is used, cold water enters the tank to replace
the hot water that was used, reducing the temperature gradually.
Once 60-70% of the stored hot water is used, there will be a
significant drop in temperature and can take about an hour to
recover. 60% Efficiency, although tank water heaters are
insulated to some extent, they still experience standby heat
loss causing the unit to constantly heat and reheat the stored
water even when the hot water isn't being used. Water heating is
the second largest energy cost in the home, so heat lost from
the tank is wasted energy and can add up quickly. As years pass,
traditional tank-type water heaters start to rust and build - up
scale inside the tank, which is where your hot water is being
stored for use.
Also, there is the risk of legion Ella bacteria
formation. Water Heaters tanks usually last 8-10 years. Water
heating can account for 14-25% of the energy consumed in your
home, remembering it's the second largest energy expense in U.S.
households. It's actually one of the least efficient appliances
due to standby heat loss. With the constant storing and heating
of the water in the tank, sediment begins to build-up and in
time will cause a malfunction of the unit. Typically if your
tank water heater warranty is near its end or already past, the
sediment build-up may be at a point where its only a matter of
time before the unit breaks down and can possibly cause major
water damage.
